Twas the end of Summer 2015...An Introduction!

Greetings!

My government name is Guadalupe Zuniga Ortega, but Pita will also be fine.
I'm currently a Junior here, actively pursuing my Bachelors in Biology. I'm also Pre-Medicine. So I have that going for me also. My obsessions include books, Harry Potter, nail polish, Youtube, the internet, and Pokemon. It's okay, I would judge me too!
I work full time nights at OU Medical Center in the inpatient Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician.
It sounds weird, but I like being up in the dead of night.
I have yearned for a pet for the longest time. But my mom won't let me. Not even a rabbit. I will occasionally send her pictures of puppies to sway her but, no success quite yet!
Pokemon Go is coming out and I am sure I'll make a fool out of myself but you bet it will be worth it!

Overall, my dream is to become a doctor so I can travel to other countries and help people in need and give them free medical attention. I would love to travel back home to my parents' hometown in Mexico to provide free checkups and maybe help set up something like a free clinic or something.

I really wish I could tell you that my summers are spent on a yacht somewhere in Europe where I would indulge the most delicious foods and wine. Or that I spent my entire summer having the most amazing adventures, which would include snowboarding and wrestling unicorns, but sadly for this chick, I mostly spent my summer working. Not to sound too bitter though, OUMC has been good to me this past year, but the extreme lack of staff has been killing me Smalls! Of course, I didn't take any summer classes, so the absence of  looming deadlines was a pretty nice change. Summer for me actually flew by pretty fast. I guess that's what happens when you put in so much over time.

I did actually take a road trip to Houston to visit my mother's side of the family. It was really nice to get away, even for just four days. We went to visit NASA, because who doesn't love science?

More than anything I just enjoyed being with my family! Of course with grandma there who can say no to home cooked meals?

Overall it was amazing to have traveled at least before school and work end up being overwhelming.
I hope everyone has an amazing semester!

  1. Pita, you seriously sound like the COOLEST person. I used to watch Pokemon all of the time and I also LOVE Harry Potter! It is so cool that you visited NASA this summer in Houston. I have only been to Houston once (even though I am from Texas), but I did not get to see NASA. It has always been on my bucket list to get to go there. Also, the gorditas and black beans look delicious! I am a huge fan of food as well and it made me drool just to look at your picture!

  2. Hey Pita!

I've never been to Houston but I kind have always wanted to go there and NASA. Your picture of it makes me want go there even more. I think it's really that you like to cook. Your picture of food looked delicious. I am a vegetarian so everything on plate looked scrumptious. I do have a quick question though, what exactly are Gorditas?

  3. Oh, the gorditas look DELICIOUS, Pita! Did you see the note in the announcements about the nopalitos tasting today for Latin American week? I wish I could have gone to that: it is one of my favorite foods. That is something I always get when I go to Austin; none of the restaurants where I live here in North Carolina serve that.

And about Harry Potter: you might want to play around with that as a way to make a project for this class. With the Patil sisters as part of the Harry Potter world, that is a perfect excuse to blend the stories of the epics (which have all kinds of magical and supernatural events) with Hogwarts! Padma means sacred lotus, and Parvati is a famous goddess! You can read about the Indian context here:

    Parvati

  4. Okay, but how could I judge someone who likes Harry Potter and Pokemon? I mean, I'd probably be more likely to judge someone for not liking those things because they're awesome!

I have a friend who is currently working towards pre-med and she also works in a pharmacy! She loves it, too! I actually started out as a chemistry major, but lost my passion for it along the way. I've always wanted to visit NASA, though. That is so cool!

  5. Hello Pita,

I also have a complicated government name, which makes people hard to remember, so I always use a nick name Evan except at paper works.

Night time shifts may sound bad for somebody, but I enjoy night time work like you do. Slow work hours are really relaxing.

I do not like summer courses because I think those courses are lectured too fast. One or three chapters for each class are hard to digest. After a summer course, I could remember little about the course.

  6. Hi Pita! I am also doing pursuing a degree in Biology and am a pre-medicine student. I could tell from your Week 6 story that you really love Harry Potter. I used to play Pokémon too when I was younger. Those games never get old. Your job sounds like a lot of hard work but it will definitely benefit you in your future career. Have a great semester!

  7. Pita. No judgement, whatsoever. I LOVE Harry Potter, and I'm actually on a hiatus of playing through my first pokemon game! School got a little busy, and something had to go... I can't wait to get back to it though! Also, how cool that you got to go to NASA! That's one of my favorite places to visit. Let me just say- that dinner looks AMAZING. Amazing. I'm not a great cook myself, and I'm lucky to manage chicken and kale on a good night, so that looks heavenly. Have a great rest of the semester, get some sleep, and finish strong!

  8. Wow, I have serious respect for you because you work full time and continue to further your education. I mom is a pharmacist and I know that her job is very demanding so I can only imagine what your job demands of you. I think there is no shame in liking a certain genre of game especially if it is Pokemon, I can't wait for Pokemon go!

  9. Hey Pita,

I used to love Pokemon and I was very excited about the announcement of PokemonGO! It will be a lot of fun. I also throughly enjoy Harry Potter, in fact I am overdue for a rematching of it! It sounds like you are on the right track to be doing what you love. Not too long ago I was way into microbiology and I thought it was the best thing on earth. My point is my dream was to help people too and I think that is an awesome quality to have when going into a career. I hope you have a great semester and good luck to the rest of your Junior year!

  10. Hi, Pita! :)

I have to admit, the first thing that I noticed about your post was the picture of gorditas and black beans -- yum!!! Now I am definitely hungry.

Confession time: I have never actually read Harry Potter! It's on my senior year bucket list, so I promise that it will happen!

I'm super jealous that you got to visit NASA! I would love to see more pictures. The discoveries being made are absolutely mind-boggling!

    I hope that you're having a wonderful semester! :)

  11. Hey Pita! I am also a night person. When I worked as an EMT, I always preferred working nights. I have never been a morning person, and the calls were always so much better at nights. I'm glad to hear that you did take a break from working to at least have a road trip. I always loved vacations even if they only lasted a few days. Well, good luck with everything!

  12. Hi Pita,
We have previously ran into each other at library. I am also a pre-med/ biology major. Have you taken your MCAT yet? It is so stressful. I am currently a senior. How do you like biology major so far? I have a hate/love relationship with this major. The picture you provided of black beans and gorditas definitely made me hungry.

  13. Hey Pita!
So I think we would be great friends! I grew up reading Harry Potter in the midnight hours the minute they were released in stores and my brother and I share a love of Pokemon games starting way back when with the original nintendo handhelds and N64 game. I'm right there with you when it comes to pets. Me and my boyfriend just moved into our first apartment and it's killing us to not be able to own a dog!! I send him pictures of puppies too! Great to meet you Pita!

  14. Hello Pita! I love that you included nail polish in your list of obsessions. I think some people judge me because I enjoy doing my nails so much. It is a great way to instantly lift your mood and does not require a lot of time or money. I wish I could send my puppy on rounds to everyone in this class who wishes they had a dog. She loves attention and is best friends with everyone who rubs her belly.

  15. Wow! I also want to be doctor and im junior. Looks like were gonna be competing...unfortunately. ts cool that you travel the world and offer your medical attention. Not very many people would like to travel and offer medical attention to the world. That is really respectable. Best of luck getting into medical school! Its a hard jouney good luck

  16. Hey Pita! I really enjoyed your intro, it was very descriptive and makes me feel like I know you. And I like how you included your obsessions even if people may think they are nerdy, I happen to be a huge Harry Potter fan myself, even dressed up to the movie premiers..no shame. I also think its awesome you have your dreams so well laid out and are so selfless. I also enjoy traveling and hope to find a career that allows me to do the same thing. Good luck with everything!
