Famous Last Words: Week 1

Well here we go! Week one down, about fifteen to go. When I think of it like that it's kind of daunting isn't it? But I'm sure it will all be fine, and before we know it, it will be almost the end of the semester. Time flies when you keep busy and that's totally something that I am, busy. My main fear is doing well in my Calc I class, which I am taking again. Bummer, right? But I am going to try to apply something that I learned in this particular class to my outlook towards that particular class and that is the growth mindset way of thinking. Now I kinda have tried to be more positive but let's see if I can apply some of the approaches that I saw in this week's Growth Mindset assignment and see how it goes. What did come as a pleasant surprise was the storytelling aspect of this course. After reading students' past story books I came to realize this new way of writing. The retelling of stories in your own words and variations in plots. I think I'm really going to like this, and it will give me a chance to be more creative with my thinking. As far getting into my writing groove, I can't really say there is a particular method to help me per say, but, I just have to think of many different ways to make a story work. Of course, I try to make it a little different from the original work, but with a little flair. Maybe give the characters a little more background or quirks. Down the road I hope to find other methods that will work for me and maybe help me if I have writers block. I know it can happen and hopefully I can find myself out of a rut if need be.

I hope to be able to look back on this very first post of Famous Last Words and see how much my perspective has grown!

Week 1 Curation

Woah! Pintrest is a thing? For stuff other than cooking and arts and crafts? Good to know because honestly I thought that's what is was all about, no lie. Which is why I never bothered to get one. I just eat the food, not make it, ha! I might have to look into it. I know there is a big hype around it so I might have to hop on that bandwagon.

Twitter is honestly something that I had for maybe a few months and left behind like an orphan of war. Maybe I didn't give it much of a chance. Although, mind you this was a couple of years ago. I'm more of a Snapchat and Facebook type of gal. But hey! If it ends up being useful for class maybe I'll have to give it a shot. I'm also someone who likes to divulge a lot of detail and my sarcastic attempts to entertain the masses couldn't be restricted to just 140 characters.

Since I do have an love for online classes, I've had to master the art of bookmarking. I have everything organized in their individual folders, and sub folders if you can believe. Now that is something I am good at! Finally, I don't feel like such a newbie!
I will actually be looking into the Known, because it looks like something that could be up and coming and might actually end up helping out a lot. I will look into it most definitely.

The following is usually the reaction I get when I tell someone that I don't have a Pinterest board with my dream wedding planned or nursery ideas and tips.

Growth Mindset

After watching the growth mindset videos, I guess you could say I never knew that was an actual way of thinking and how much good it could do, based of the scientific facts I mean. And it makes sense, because now a days it is common for one to feel like a failure and beat ourselves up, many of us not being able to pick ourselves up after not achieving something we desire. I think I have in a sense begun to take on this form of thinking, but I never knew there was an actual name for this and the research involved in it. I used to be very hard on myself, especially in the academic sense. I would spend my time beating myself up instead of just assuming the challenge and bettering myself. But now, I have much more of a "get up and get it done" approach. Instead of just crying over spilled milk, as you would say, I would talk to myself, crazy as it sounds, and tell myself that it won't help anything. That I have to get up and if I want something, I have to "fight" for it. I hate to admit it, but I am not good at math. Well, rather that I don't like it very much, to put it lightly. And last semester I failed my Calc I course, and here I am retaking it again, but with a better and more positive mentality. I think that the Growth Mindset challenge that would help me out the most is the one that has to do with my other classes. I will attempt to maximize my efforts in every other class as well!

Here's my favorite meme that I've found thus far:

Storybook Favorites

After doing some browsing, I noticed a trend in what really piqued my interest. I may have left out that I enjoy the macabre and weird on occasion. Did I leave that out of my intro? Guess so! I love shows like Deadly Women, American Horror Story, and any scary movie that may or may not include buckets of blood and guts. I work in a hospital, and during the night shift no less...we see some crazy stuff. But you are free to judge me if you like, ha!

My favorite of all three storybooks that I read was one titled Indian Horror Story by Hoang Truong.

It's the first one I clicked on and I actually ended up reading the whole thing. The concept was awesome and it kept me reading, so that's a plus. Very good story! After reading the introduction I just knew I couldn't just stop there. The layout of the page was simple but emitted the mood of the story. Very well done. I enjoyed how the main character went and saw the different visions of different occupants of the house in the past.

The second one shouldn't come as a surprise since I picked it based off just the title, Evil Women of the Ramayana.
Sounds intriguing right? I was totally on board. It wasn't exactly as dark as I was expecting, just going based of the title, but it was a very good story. It has a good point and moral of the story. The stories blended well together and transitioned in a way that was easy to understand.

My final storybook I didn't pick because of the above reasons, but it did look interesting, because I know that some of the gods and goddesses in India have some sort of animalistic characteristics to them, like body parts and such. It is called Hindu Beasts. At first I thought that the story about Ganesha the wise was going to be something similar to the Tortoise and the Hare, but not quite.I really did enjoy it. It was probably my second favorite. I really liked how the perspective was that of someone telling a bedtime story, in a casual manner.

Overall I'm very excited to plan out my project and after reading these I hope to do a good job. I didn't quite grasp how we would be doing things

Indian Epics: An Overview

After reading through the information provided, I can honestly say I'm very intrigued to explore all the reading material and learn a lot more about all these stories. I initially wanted to enroll into a Mythology course, but this particular one was open so I figured it would be just as interesting, if not more. I don't really know much about Indian culture in great depth, even though I do have friends that share their experiences with me when they travel back home to India and I do naturally ask lots of questions, because it's in my nature. But, I can't pretend to know more than what is mostly general information pertaining to the culture. I love to read, it's like getting lost in a whole other world, and mythology in general is fascinating. I never thought to think outside the world of Greek Mythology so I think I will learn a lot from this course. The images are very unique and portray a rich and rustic look into the world of Indian epic tales.

The only character name that stood out to me from the overview of the reading assignments is Krishna. I am mainly only familiar with her from just general reading and such.

I have never taken a course that deals with just general mythology, although that was my intention prior to enrolling in Indian Epics  I wanted to get more of a background in it. As I stated previously, I mainly think of Greek mythology when I think about the words "epic" and "mythology".
Although I haven't seen many Indian films, there is one in particular that I do love watching. It may not count, mainly because it is a movie adaptation of Jane Austin's novel Pride and Prejudice. The move is called Bride and Prejudice starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. Essentially Austin's novel got the Bollywood treatment! It's very fun to see how a classic novel's plot can be changed up and made to fit the Bollywood style.

I look forward to exploring a whole new word of material!

Twas the end of Summer 2015...An Introduction!

Greetings!

My government name is Guadalupe Zuniga Ortega, but Pita will also be fine.
I'm currently a Junior here, actively pursuing my Bachelors in Biology. I'm also Pre-Medicine. So I have that going for me also. My obsessions include books, Harry Potter, nail polish, Youtube, the internet, and Pokemon. It's okay, I would judge me too!
I work full time nights at OU Medical Center in the inpatient Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician.
It sounds weird, but I like being up in the dead of night.
I have yearned for a pet for the longest time. But my mom won't let me. Not even a rabbit. I will occasionally send her pictures of puppies to sway her but, no success quite yet!
Pokemon Go is coming out and I am sure I'll make a fool out of myself but you bet it will be worth it!

Overall, my dream is to become a doctor so I can travel to other countries and help people in need and give them free medical attention. I would love to travel back home to my parents' hometown in Mexico to provide free checkups and maybe help set up something like a free clinic or something.

I really wish I could tell you that my summers are spent on a yacht somewhere in Europe where I would indulge the most delicious foods and wine. Or that I spent my entire summer having the most amazing adventures, which would include snowboarding and wrestling unicorns, but sadly for this chick, I mostly spent my summer working. Not to sound too bitter though, OUMC has been good to me this past year, but the extreme lack of staff has been killing me Smalls! Of course, I didn't take any summer classes, so the absence of  looming deadlines was a pretty nice change. Summer for me actually flew by pretty fast. I guess that's what happens when you put in so much over time.

I did actually take a road trip to Houston to visit my mother's side of the family. It was really nice to get away, even for just four days. We went to visit NASA, because who doesn't love science?

More than anything I just enjoyed being with my family! Of course with grandma there who can say no to home cooked meals?

Overall it was amazing to have traveled at least before school and work end up being overwhelming.
I hope everyone has an amazing semester!

Week 1 Storytelling: The Five Pigs

 Wikimedia.org

On Piggy Island, there lived a family of five pigs. They all lived in a tiny cottage on the outskirts of a grand forest, filled with Sequoya’s as tall as skyscrapers. One could even say they grazed the clouds above them. It was a beautiful and sunny Saturday afternoon. The oldest of the five went to the supermarket to buy food to prepare a gourmet dinner. Being in culinary school has its perks. And this pig loved to be the center of attention and show of her skills. The second oldest pig stayed at home, probably to oversee the cleaning and chores. This pig had a cleaning itch he could never quite scratch. Nothing was ever too tidy for him, ask anyone. The third oldest pig couldn’t wait for dinner and decided to have a bit of beef jerky in the meantime, but refused to share with his younger sibling, the fourth of the bunch, because he was immature and selfish. The way to his heart? Fill his belly with delicious treats and savory dishes. It’s not hard to guess that the eldest sibling was the apple of his eye, for she cooked and cooked and loved to spoil him. The fourth eldest, a kind and gentle soul, didn’t have anything in particular to win their affection. Content with the simplest things, it wasn’t hard to earn their affection. The youngest and fifth sibling pig had an adventurous streak and wandered away from home, crying because she couldn’t find her way back. Hours and hours this little one ventured in the setting sun amongst the giant foliage. Eventually, after crying “wee, wee, wee! I can’t find my way home”, she wandered back to the tiny cottage, safe and sound. And just in time for dinner! But, not without being scolded for causing such a scare.

Author's Note:

Original Nursery Rhyme

The Five Pigs

THIS pig went to market;
2. This pig stayed at home;
3. This pig had a bit of meat,
4. And this pig had none;
5. This pig said, "Wee, wee, wee!
I can't find my way home."

For my first attempt at this kind of assignment I do hope I did somewhat well. I chose this nursery rhyme because it was one of the ones I was most familiar with. And, I 'm sure mostly everyone will have had at least heard this particular nursery rhyme during their infancy. Since it is so short in length and of course very vague, as a nursery rhyme should be, This rhyme first made its debut in 1728 in a work called "The Nurse's Song", but only the first line. Later on the rhyme in it's entirety was published in "The Famous Tommy Thumb's Little Story Book", which was published in London in approximately the year 1760. Since then, there have been different variations to the original rhyme which is still very popular today. I decided to  give these flat characters at least a little bit of dynamic and characteristics that might make them more endearing to the reader. And since there isn't much of an extensive plot I had to find away for it to keep its short and simple charm and have at least a little bit of a story line to follow. I really enjoyed working on this first attempt at storytelling and hope that my skills evolve and I learn how to better my writing skills and I learn to open my mind and most of all my imagination!

Favorite Place...San Francisco!

As someone who rarely travels out of the state of Oklahoma, I had the opportunity to travel to the West Coast in March 2015 to see my best friend who is stationed in the Sacramento area!
It was amazing! We spent a couple days in San Francisco to have a couple of adventures and I have never had more of an amazing time then I had there. It's a fascinating city. I absolutely loved it and I really hope to live there in the future. I went back this year for spring break and I'm just counting down the months until I get to return to this beautiful city.
